An employee of Apalachee Center was arrested Monday after allegedly having a sexual encounter with a woman he worked with in a counseling group. Deion Jarrell Young, 23, was arrested on a charge of an "employee having sex with a mental patient," a second-degree felony, according to court documents. He also was fired from his position at Apalachee Center, which provides inpatient and outpatient care to people with mental health issues and addiction. In early March, a woman reported to the Tallahassee Police Department that she was sexually battered by Young, who served as her "peer specialist" for her counseling group. She said she went on a walk with Young, whom she didn't know well, on the campus of the Apalachee Center.

In California, when a patient reveals to a psychotherapist that during the course of a prior treatment the patient engaged in sexual intercourse or other sexual behavior or sexual conduct with the previous psychotherapist, there is a requirement to give the patient a specified brochure a government publication and to discuss the contents of the brochure with the patient. Some may ask why there is no requirement for the subsequent therapist to report such alleged unlawful or criminal behavior on the part of the prior therapist. The patient should be the one who chooses to report the wrongdoing after the patient has been made aware of information regarding therapist sex with patient and the several options that can be pursued.
